Grayscale’s ‘Demotion’ of ETH and SOL Is a Red Herring. ADA Is the Real Casualty

Trends | 0xSam |
BNB just took the crown. Grayscale’s Smart Contract Fund now holds BNB at 30.6% weight. Ethereum sits at 29.47%. Solana: 29.15%. The announcement dropped on August 5. The rebalance was already live on August 3. Headlines screamed demotion. They’re wrong. Not even close. Chaos is just data waiting to be organized. That’s what quarterly rebalances are: organized chaos. Grayscale runs three funds — Smart Contract, DeFi, and the newly highlighted AI Fund. No code changed. No chain forked. This is an index methodology output, not a technical verdict. But it’s still a verdict. On institutional capital. Let’s talk about the methodology first. Grayscale’s funds are market-cap weighted. With a cap. Look at the top three weights: BNB 30.6%, ETH 29.47%, SOL 29.15%. The spread is less than 1.5 points. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a weight ceiling doing its job. The cap is likely set at 30%, and BNB got bumped right up against it. Under this system, a token’s weight changes when its relative market cap changes. If BNB outperformed ETH and SOL over the quarter, it gets more weight — until it hits the cap. Simple math. No conspiracy. But then there’s Cardano. ADA fell from 17.96% to 4.88%. That’s a 13-point crash. That’s not a rounding error. That’s the real demotion. The numbers tell a cleaner story than the headlines. ETH weight dropped only 0.67 points. SOL: 0.54 points. Combined, they lost about 1.2 points. BNB didn’t cannibalize them directly. The real funding source was the sell-off in ADA, HBAR, AVAX, and SUI. So when the press says “Ethereum and Solana got demoted,” it’s technically true but practically meaningless. Their positions barely moved. What does matter is the implied institutional stance. Grayscale now treats BNB, ETH, and SOL as near-equivalent. That’s a massive shift in narrative. For years, the debate was Ethereum vs. Solana. Now it’s a three-way tie. The message: no single L1 will dominate. From my experience auditing index funds, this is the hallmark of a risk-averse, diversified construction. You don’t take a stance. You let the market tell you what to hold. The DeFi Fund reinforces that. ONDO’s weight jumped from 19.83% to 25.44%. UNI got trimmed but remains the top holding. AAVE slipped too. The clear theme: Grayscale is shifting DeFi exposure from “blue-chip governance tokens” to RWA yield-bearing assets. That’s not a technical judgment. It’s a yield play. Institutional capital chases income, not just governance rights. The AI Fund is a different beast. NEAR leads at 31.35%, TAO at 29.15%, then RENDER and FIL. No dominant player. This is a basket of AI infrastructure plays. It tells you Grayscale is still exploring the sector, not making a winner-take-all bet. And that’s a signal: AI + crypto hasn’t produced a single protocol with institutional-grade dominance yet. Now the contrarian angle. The “demotion” narrative is a media artifact. ETH and SOL are still nearly a third of the fund each. Their fall is a ranking change, not a capital flight. The real story is that Grayscale implicitly endorses a multi-chain world. But here’s what everyone misses: the fund’s AUM is unknown. Grayscale didn’t disclose it. If the Smart Contract Fund manages only a few hundred million dollars, the actual dollar flows from this rebalance are trivial compared to BNB’s daily volume. The impact is psychological, not structural. Volatility is the market’s way of punishing people who trade headlines instead of weightings. And what about BNB’s rise? Don’t mistake it for a fundamental bet. BNB hit the cap because its market cap outperformed. That’s a mechanical outcome, not an innovation award. Security is a promise; liquidity is the proof. BNB has deep liquidity, yes, but so do ETH and SOL. The difference is relative performance during a chaotic quarter. Then there’s ADA. The 13-point drop is enormous. But it’s likely a function of Cardano’s relative market cap decline, not a deliberate rejection by Grayscale. Unless you believe the fund managers manually decided to dump ADA — which contradicts their passive-index design. The more rational explanation: ADA’s price weakens, developers migrate, momentum fades. The index just records the fallout. Regulatory context adds another layer. Grayscale is a US-regulated entity. It included BNB and SOL despite the SEC’s historical scrutiny of both. That’s a compliance signal. But it’s not an SEC endorsement. If the SEC later tightens its stance, Grayscale could be forced to rebalance again. That’s a latent risk embedded in every institutional product. What should you actually watch? The next quarterly rebalance. If BNB holds its top spot, that tells you something. If ADA continues to bleed, that tells you something else. But don’t mistake a mechanical index shift for a strategic call. ETH and SOL aren’t in trouble. They’re just no longer alone. What you see on-chain is not always what you get. And in this case, what you see in the headlines is even less reliable. The real signal is the equal-weighting of the top three L1s — a quiet admission that the smart contract platform race is now a tie. Until one chain proves it can capture lasting dominance, Grayscale will keep treating them like interchangeable assets. That’s the takeaway. Watch the methodology, not the marketing.
